Press Statement: Take A Heed form Burkina Faso and Don't Take Things for Granted Mr. President

TAKE A HEED FROM BURKINA FASO AND DON’T TAKE THINGS FOR GRANTED MR PRESIDENT

The Companion is shocked by the unconstitutional action of the acting Inspector General of Police in withdrawing the security details of the Speaker of House of Representative, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal on account of the defection of the speaker from PDP to APC. This is a very sad development in polity and is capable of throwing the country into avoidable and unnecessary crisis especially now that the country is full of political tension preparatory to the general election designed to come up in few months.

We call on the President to quickly douse the tension by calling the Acting Inspector General of Police to order. The country has more than enough crises on its hand to grapple with and cannot afford another self inflicted chaos. It is on record that as at the time the Inspector General withdrew the security details of the Speaker, there is no leadership vacuum or crisis in the House of Representative. The House is on recess and the parliament did not declare the seat of the Speaker vacant. The unilateral action of the Acting Inspector General is therefore condemnable and regrettable. It is an act of impunity and recklessness which must be curbed. We recall that before now, the Speaker of Ondo state defected to Peoples Democratic Party the same Acting Inspector General did not go against him to withdraw his security details. Why the double standard we ask.

We enjoin the President and indeed the political class to be mindful of the recent development in Burkina Faso and stop this invitation to lawlessness. We call on the president not to take things for granted. This was how the criminal neglect by the authorities led to the Boko Haram insurgence which has now assumed international dimension far beyond the ability of Nigeria and her military might to curtail.
