Press Statement: On Death of Job Seekers at Nigeria Immigration Service Recruitment Interview

E-mail Print PDF

BEING PRESS STATEMENT ISSSUED BY THE NATIONAL AMIR (PRESIDENT) OF THE COMPANION, ALHAJI MUSIBAU OYEFESO ON THE DEATH OF JOB SEEKERS AT NIGERIA IMMIGRATION SERVICE RECRUITMENT INTERVIEW

Again Nigeria witnessed the tragic incidence of the avoidable death of several young men and women in different parts of the country while seeking legitimate employment to serve their uncaring fatherland. The show of shame and disdain called recruitment test conducted by the Nigeria Immigration Service is a terrible embarrassment and impunity which calls for investigation and sanction of the officers involved.

It is worrisome that the Nigeria Immigration Service is becoming notorious for killing innocent and young Nigerians at its recruitment interviews. Last year a similar interview exercise was conducted and several applicants died in the stampede that ensued. Nigeria Immigration Service must not be allowed to get away with this recurring criminal act. They must be stopped from further killing of innocent Nigerians.

We sincerely commiserate with the families of these young men and women.

We call on the government to immediately charge the Interior Minister and the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service for attempted murder. The incident must be probed. How on earth is it possible to conduct recruitment interview for over 60,000 applicants in one venue in this day of digital technology. This incidence clearly raises the issue of competence of those at the helm of affairs in the service. It is unpardonable that the leadership of the service was fully aware of the large number of applicants and yet went ahead to organise the so called interview in one central location in each state of the federation.

Obviously, youth unemployment in Nigeria is at a desperate level and the government must find desperate solution. A situation where over 700,000 applicants are seeking employment to fill 5,000 vacancies is a bad omen for the country. We call on the government to seek help from well meaning and genuine experts who can assist to provide creative solution to this monster before it gets out of hand.

Signed

Alhaji Musibau Oyefeso
